Piercing Aftercare...How Your Piercing Heals is up to You!
Congratulations! You've just received a body piercing by a
trained professional who cleaned and disinfected the
piercing, the instruments and jewlery, and used sterile
needles. Now it is up to you to take appropriate care of
your piercing during the critical healing period. It is most
important that a new piercing be CLEANED TWO OR THREE TIMES
EACH DAY during the first critical week to one month.Use
appropriate cleanser suggested below for best results on
your specific piercing. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TOUCH OR MOVE THE
JEWELRY until you have cleaned your hands thoroughly, AND
the entrance holes to the piercing. The purpose of cleaning
the pierced area BEFORE attempting to move jewlery is to
remove all matter (mostly lymph and other dried body fluids)
that collect on the jewelry and the piercing during the
healing period. Infection or irritation of a new piercing
generally occurs because crusty matter was forced into the
piercing. Body fluids are sticky and attract airborne or
other bacteria that can infect your new piercing. After
cleaning, blot piercing and jewelry dry with clean tissue
and apply a small dab of STERILE LUBRICANT (ointments like
Neosporin, Bacitracin, Triple Antibiotic, etc.) to jewelry
at exit holes. This will ease healing and your body's
adjustment to jewelry during the first days of healing.
CAUTION: ointments DO NOT clean or disinfect a piercing!
They are only a safe lubricant and NOT a substitute for
cleaning with Bactine, antibacterial or castile soap. TO
SPEED HEALING, discontinue ointment after a week; it will
slow the healing process. After the initial adjustment
period, piercings heal faster when dry and clean. Also, some
piecings find that daily use of zinc supplement
(50mg.tablet) speeds healing or the application of vitamin E
directly on the piercing after it has been cleaned.
Oral contact with a new piercing, or handling with unclean
hands, can cause infection and should be avoided. While
genital piercings do not prohibit sex during the healing
process, in the interests of good hygiene, it is a good idea
ot use a rubber or other barrier to minimize infection. Also
a new piercing should not be subjected to heavy abuse during
the healing process. If a local infection should occur
(indicated by redness, swelling, itching, pus), try this
IMMEDIATE FIRST AID: thoroughly work in a generous quantity
of BETADINE TOPICAL ANTICEPTIC solution (not skin cleanser)
If the solution stings, you've reached the minor local
infection. If the condition persists with this continued
treatment, contact your piercing professional or local
doctor.
DO NOT use alcohol OR peroxide, or associated
products!! They can severely dry and burn a piercing, as
well as kill the GOOD GERMS! The good germs you need, they
kill the bad germs. By overcleaning, you may be causing more
harm than good! DO NOT touch your piercing with unwashed
hands!!
Tongues, lips, and cheeks: Requires special
aftercare. May swell the first 24-48 hrs. Rinse mouth
frequently (every hour or two) with Listerine, Peridex, or
similar antibacterial mouthwash, drink lots of cold fluids
and use ice to minimize swelling. Use GLY-OXIDE on the
piercing, both sides, several times per day. May need to
continue for four to six weeks, avoid oral contact. Flushing
a piercing with Sterile Saline Solution (like the kind
you use in contact lenses) IS EXCELLENT for piercing cleaning
and maintanance!

instructions in a nutshell....
Ok, reasons for all this stuff. If you unbandage it early, you will allow dirt and crap to get into it, it may also bleed and become messy. Please allow for the healing process to start! Then with the ointments....NO Vasaline! The petroliuim can damage a tattoo! As far aas Bacitracin and Neosporin, they are also petrolium based. Be careful! The majority of these products contain petroleum or lanolin which when applied to a new tattoo can clog skin pores and actually delay your body's healing process. A large number of people have allergic reactions to these products and application to a new tattoo can cause skin reactions leading to loss of ink and permanent damage to your tattoo. Ointments also tend to cause an ointment rash with many people. If you find your tattoo getting red, itchy, even rash like, breaking out, the immediateley discontinue ointment, wash your tattoo and just use lotion! The ointment rash will go right away. We sell a product that is GREAT for tattoos, Check out the Tattoo Goo! See it on the Product, Merchandise, and Cool Stuff to Buy. |
